The days of summer are coming to an end, back to school shopping lists are being made, and sleep schedules are being practiced and enforced. All these indicators point towards heading back to school. Whether it be a new school, new grade, new friends, and even new circumstances going back to school can bring up a mix of emotions from nervousness to excitement!
Earlier this summer I wrote an open letter to high school graduates that gave tips for making the most of their next step. If you are headed to college in next few weeks here are a few steps to help you get acclimated with your new schedule and life.
Set Goals for the School Year
Make sure to set realistic goals for your new semester.
Examples of this could setting a sleep schedule, establishing a good GPA, losing weight, or learning something new.
Schedule Time for Fun
Going to school is fun and should be enjoyed. This does not mean you never study or take care of yourself. Schedule time throughout your day and week to have fun and be social.
Take Care of Yourself
Your new schedule is going to be very busy between homework, class, and your social schedule. Make sure to get some exercise daily, distress, and take care of yourself.
Stay in Contact with your Teachers
I have found establishing a rapport with your instructor can greatly help you throughout your semester and time at school. If you show and act like you care and are committed they will help you out. You are not alone in this, and they are paid to teach and help. Do not be afraid to ask questions or for help.
Going to school for the first time or returning can truly be an exciting and nervous feeling. I strongly encourage you to embrace those feelings and take these tips to heart for the upcoming semester. The Farm Bureau Health Plans family is cheering you on for a great year!
