Q: Would I Ever Want To Drop Part B?

POSTED BY TRACY AT FBHP

A: Let’s assume you are not working and you have already signed up for Part A and Part B. If you or your spouse re-enters the workforce and lands a job with employer health coverage, you may decide you really don’t need your employer plan and Part B.

You are allowed to drop Part B and sign up again once you leave that employment. This strategy is a reasonable one as long as your employer coverage pays primary to Medicare (20 or more employees). Keep this in mind - only you can decide whether this strategy is reasonable for you.

It’s a big decision and you don’t want to make a mistake here. That’s why you may be required to have a personal interview at the Social Security office and fill out a form that is not available online before you are allowed to do it.
